Paper Thin

Dedicated to a dear friend and other victims of domestic violence: This poem is based on a real life experience as an apartment dweller many years ago.  Please be warned, if you have experienced past trauma or violence, the contents may be upsetting or inappropriate for reading

Paper Thin
I've seen you only in passing,
“Greetings” a pleasant neutral "Hello;"
 Yet, I know you like NIN and loud music,
of this, these paperthin walls tell me so -

You appear all the Prince Charming,
a handsome smile I'd like to better know;
Your girlfriend's elegant, blonde, skin of ivory,
of this, my window above tells me so -

Furniture crashes; resounds beneath me,
your sonorous baritone drowns the radio;
She screams for her life paralyzed in terror,
of this, these paperthin walls tell me so -

I lie still in darkness; fearfully praying,
I cry for her freedom - please let her go!
Sometimes God is too busy to answer,
of this, life’s experience tells me so -

911 responds addressing my urgent plea,
and as I first meet your once fair girlfriend,
she’s darkened with your heavy fisted blow -
And, I wonder will you be disowned;
   clawing at the ivory gates of Heaven?
of this, I wish God would tell me so.
